Hardware And Operating System

Vitality of a Network Operating System to the Business by Khalid Kamal
Today large as well as small scale companies are using the networking system because most of the business data gathered is in the electronic form. The devices which are used for this purpose are quite composite because they are comprised of hardware as well as software.
In its software, the network operating system known as NOS is termed as the system software. It operates with the networking devices for controlling the total processes of the network. It is a good one for network management having tasks, file and process management. Traditionally the versions of NOS were running on other operating systems as it was not an independent one. For example the LAN server used to run with OS/2 whereas LANtastic with DOS. Now the latest ones are MS Windows Server 2008, Novell NetWare and Mac OS X.
The network operations system is developed and is based on the architecture of client’s server. Here the server permits different clients to share the resources and if any request comes from any client PC is also managed by it. It also takes care for the network security for multi-user systems. The client PC has at least one file sharing utility helpful making communication with the server. With this it can access many applications, databases and other networking devices like modems, routers, printers etc. We can add many client nodes and can also manage the existing nodes by modifying or deleting them. Backup and access of data is handled by it to ensure availability of the information to the client’s machine. A good IT support provider can help in configuring the NOS for various processes.
NOS are available in two categories as peer to peer and client server. We find the combination of these two in the networking systems of every organization and a single one can be used as well. A peer to peer NOS has the nodes equally and not having any main server. All the nodes are free to share the information with each other. This NOS is very helpful to the small and medium local area networks in a company.
Whereas the client server NOS contains a central server with applications and documents sharing with more than one servers. This server performs the duty of transferring the access to the information and data between the networking nodes. The access is controlled by the server. The cost of maintaining a client server NOS is more in comparison to the peer to peer NOS as in case of server crash it creates an impact on the whole network.
