Web content management system (CMS) is an application that is used to create and manage websites. It keeps track of all possible resources of website. It is like a library which stores books. All the books are available to you if you know how to find them. CMS works the same way. It stores images, text, music, video, documents, or any other content used to create web pages. One of the biggest advantages of using CMS is that you need no technical knowledge or skill to use it and to create websites.
Joomla is one of the best open-source CMS systems around. Joomla has won many awards for content management systems (CMS). Joomla enables anybody with basic web knowledge to build attractive websites and powerful online applications including personal or family homepages, school and church websites, community-based portals, small business websites, corporate intranet pages, corporate websites, E-commerce and online reservations, etc. Joomla is limited only with your imagination. Joomla is the most popular free CMS because it is easy to use and is extensible. There are thousands of extensions (components, modules and plug-ins, most are free under the GPL license) to add functionality for any imaginable web project.
Joomla started from the Mambo project in 2005. After some initial discussions the development team created a web site called OpenSourceMatters. Its purpose was to distribute information to users, web designers developers, and the community in general. The core team later announced a new name for the project, “Joomla!”. Later also the Joomla logo was selected, after few years a new version 1.5 was released and version 1.6 is also announced to have some big improvements like built-in granular user access control, flexible category model, and many others.
Joomla is easy to install even for beginners. It is offered as a single-click install with many hosting providers. In few minutes your site is up and running. Immediately after successful installation you can start creating web pages. You choose a template and start writing content. Joomla also supports users with different permissions. One group of users can asses the system and create the content, while few administrator can access the Joomla back end without limitations to administer website, publish content and do other administrative tasks.
Joomla is currently the most popular open-source CMS around. Joomla has a huge community of enthusiastic users and talented developers. Because of this and because of thousands of extensions that extend the functionality of the basic system, Joomla has a very bright future. Even if you require some functionality that is currently not supported, Joomla’s powerful application framework enables any skilled developer to write specific extension for your task. Joomla is available to anyone. It is a free, open-source content management system. You download it, install it, use it and enjoy it. There is no limit on what you can do with Joomla. The only limit is your imagination.
